Atlanta, Georgia (February 13, 2012) - - Radiation Oncology Services of America, Inc. (ROSA) congratulates partner Mark McCord, M.D., of Atlanta Oncology Associates who was honored at the 6th Annual “Evening of Hope,” an American Cancer Society Gala Event.

Each year, the Evening of Hope Executive Committee recognizes a local cancer survivor as well as a medical professional who provides hope and inspiration to those touched by cancer.  The 2012 gala was held Friday, February 10, 2012, at the Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta.  Mr. Pete Vanwieren was also honored as Survivor Honoree.  Congressman Tom Price served as Honorary Chair.

“All of those who have had the privilege to get to know Dr. Mark McCord as a patient, co-worker, or friend in the community can attest to his passion and compassion for cancer patients.  These attributes help him provide hope and inspiration to cancer patients, survivors and their families,” said Greg Merrill, President and COO of ROSA.

Dr. Mark McCord’s father, Dale McCord M.D., also a radiation oncologist and founder of Atlanta Oncology Associates, attended the event.  “Mark’s work with the American Cancer Society has long been a source of pride and inspiration for me and all of the physicians at Atlanta Oncology Associates.  We thank the ACS for recognizing Mark’s dedication, and we congratulate Mr. Vanwieren and Congressman Price on their commendations.”

“I am humbled to have been selected by the Executive Committee for this honor,” said Mark McCord, M.D.  “The American Cancer Society is one of our best resources and partners in the fight against cancer, and it is a privilege to share the stage with Mr. Vanwieren and Congressman Price as we highlight the importance of hope for cancer patients and their families.”

Radiation Oncology Services of America, Inc., headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee, owns interests in, operates and manages 19 radiation therapy facilities in six states.  ROSA is a subsidiary of Ambulatory Services of America, Inc. (ASA), a diversified health care services company also headquartered in Brentwood, Tennessee.  ASA provides alternative site services in partnership with physicians through its primary subsidiaries, Radiation Oncology Services of America, Inc. and Innovative Dialysis Systems.

Hi Dick,Thanks for the update – glad to hear that round two started out okay. Have you named your infusion device yet? Seems like that if it has to stay w/ you for 72 hrs that you should be on a first name basis. Matt named his IV pump “George” during one of his hospitalizations. George went everywhere w/ him for several days. We’ve also been watching the news for word on Nashville. I had a notice earlier this week from the learning management software system company (used by the hospital and based in Nashville) that customer support would be limited because hardly anyone could get to work. Hope today finds you well. You are as always in our thoughts and prayers.Love,Sue

Hi Sue,I had not thought about giving my IV pump a name, but that’s a good item. I consider all the chemo drugs and the equipment to administer them to be my “friends.” And friends should have a cool name.Hummm… I think I will call him Perley, the pump. Perley is my fraternal grandfather’s name. We lived next to each other when I was growing up in Towanda so I saw him every day. He was always good to me and I could always count on him to encourage and support me. So Perley feels like a good name!Fortunately, we did not have any major damage from the flooding. Just some water in the crawl space that drained in a couple of days. However, there are many very hard hit areas in the Nashville area and throughout middle Tennessee.Love to my sister-in-law and the rest of your family.Dick

It’s best to avoid contact of any sort – the concern is possible infection or disease because of a reduced immunity. It may sound a little wierd but get some items like hand sanitizer and dispossible rubber gloves to have handy.

generally speaking, surgery and radiation is the protocol sometimes with chemo added on top of those things. Research just hasn’t gotten beyond that yet, unfortunately. However, depending on the hospital you’re treated at, there may be clinical trials available. For information on clinical trials, visit clinicaltrials.gov

She has no immune system right now and you should not be touching her or anything she may have to handle. How about everyone wearing disposable gloves as much as possible? Also, don’t let very young (kids who go to day-care or school setting) have much contact or anyone that seems ill in any way.

no, no honey. you want to make sure they get no germs from you. they are very susceptible to germs and colds right now, and that could be devastating. just make sure you wash your hands often, and make sure you don’t breathe on them… they should actually be wearing a dust mask, to protect them, from you… hang in there, just be sympathetic, they just need you folks to be very clean around them.

This sounds like it was a very worrying (and tiring!) time for both of you. I think you are right to look at it as the doctors being thorough even though it does mean a lot of extra time at the hospital and a lot of waiting around. I hope today brings some better news for you all and that you somehow managed to get some sleep too xx

Nah. Scarier, older cell phones than we have today don’t cause cancer. Really, the sort of radiation they put out is lower EM, at frequencies that your body is as transparent to as glass is to sunlight.A lot of it is that we’re better at diagnosing ****** cancer today, we have better screening methods, better detection and better treatment. A huge number of the various forms of ****** cancer have excellent survival rates now. Also, people who get it don’t tend to keep quiet about it. They know what they have, they take charge of their illness, and don’t let it drive them back to a quiet death in their homes, out of sight.

- there are many other options available in the US.The real question is “BETTER” than chemo or radiation really better? I’m a Cancer survivor who owes his life to chemo and radiation therapy. It worked for me. Cancer Treatment Centers of America bases it’s advertising on providing the most and best therapy’s available for Cancer. I may be biased, being an American- but even so, the research I’ve done rates America’s treatments, drugs, and general procedures a healthy cut above the rest of the world. I guess my best advice – based on my opinion- would be to go with the usual course of treatment prescribed , unless the prognosis or results were terminal.

Hi, depending on the dosage.. the doctor would give you all specifics.. If the dosage is high enough you should not even share the same bathroom with that person, no bedding , towels, toilet seat, sinks etc..If you are unsure check with the prescribing doctor.. I had only a minor dose at one point and I had to stay away from my children for a month.. It is very dangerous even to the person taking it.. it is radiation..I will pray for you and your family during this difficult time..God Bless you all with courage and strength.

I just happened across your blog and as a doctor and as someone who has been involved with a significant other who's gone through several life-threatening illnesses and spent a significant amount of time in the hospital I so sympathize with your situation. Both on the personal and professional levels. It's so hard to be an advocate for the person you love and so emotionally overwrought at the same time you don't know which end is up. I'd pay close attention to just ducky's words... you do need an advocate on your side, and I'd suggest more than one in your case, someone who is familiar with the medical aspects of your husband's illness and the standards of care and treatment (what is the acceptable standard of care for his IV line, for instance, i.e. when should it have been removed according to medical standards of practice?) This will help you not only deal with this issue but ones that will crop up in the future, and trust me, more will. When my SO was sick I remember not being able to imagine going through that as someone who was NOT familiar with the medical profession. And then you need someone who's familiar with the ins and outs of the legal and ethical system as well, who can help guide you through the process of inquiring into what happened with him and how the hospital can make it right. I know the people on here who suggested going public meant well, but I think that should be only a last resort if the hospital is not willing to admit they made a mistake and is not willing to make things right, if they can. Just my $0.02. I wish you and your family the best in your struggle.

Crunchy,I so sympathize with you and my prayers are with you and your husband. I know this is probably the most trying time you've been through, but you're a strong, capable woman which is precisely what your husband needs at this time. My family is in the midst of a similar situation, except my aunt has 5 different infections which are ALL hospital related. She cannot be admitted to ICU because of fear of infecting the other patients. Right now, she is in an infectious disease unit. It would take me days to write about the ins and outs of it all. Our family has contacted the County Health Department, the media and has hired an attorney. The Health Department has yet to lift a finger and, sadly, my aunt isn't the only patient that was infected at this particular hospital (which she has since been transferred from), but many more have been and will be before it's all over due to their non-sterile practices. Apparently, the private hospital she was previously in is a huge corporation and, though complaints abound, they "mysteriously" go untouched. If it weren't for my other aunt being a registered nurse and my mother being at her ailing sister's side day and night watching over and noting staff procedures, my aunt would be dead by now. Seems that once you start making waves, it's amazing the level of outright neglect a patient receives. This isn't to frighten you, but to suggest what you may be up against in blowing the whistle. Stay very, very close to your husband's side and watch, very carefully, everything that goes on and do not be afraid to question any and everything no matter what! A good hospital, with a caring staff shouldn't mind your questions and concerns. Where my aunt has now been transferred to is much better and explains every procedure without hesitation.Again, my prayers are with you. And please take care of yourself, eat well and rest when possible. Your husband needs every ounce of your strength right now.Blessings, grace and mercy on you all,Free

I would consider looking at clinical trials. Every treatment I have been through has been a part of a clinical trial. But, the last one was the only one I did because I had no other good option. For the most part, I always had a good prognosis, which made me a good candidate for some of the trials. So, if I have already done clinical trials, I am sure I would if current available treatment would not help very much – unless I decided not to pursue treatment. But I would not go to all the supposed cancer cures that people talk about. I have seen too many that are just wrong, and many that are dangerous. If I had exhausted all other options, I would just not pursue treatment at all.

Just as the poster rfboee me, they do radiation even for Stage 2 cancers. I have to get radiation for Stage 3B Breast Cancer I was officially diagnosed as cancer free but I have still have to go thrut he radiation as a safety measure. All Stage 4 cancer is bad but that does not mean that she can't beat it people beat statistics all the time. Keep a positive attitude and my thoughts and prayers are with you and her and the family during this difficult time.
